The aim of a secret study project which Audi undertook in 1984, using an Audi 80 as a basis, was to explore the feasible limits of passenger-car aerodynamics. The target was to achieve a drag coefficient (cD) below 0.2, and this value was indeed obtained in the course of the project. The remarkable feature of this car is not so much its low drag coefficient as the fact that the record –breaking value was recorded without sacrificing the basic saloon-car shape. The main aerodynamic measures adopted were an entirely smooth undertray and a markedly curved windscreen, which avoided any breakaway of the airflow. Powered by a 136-bhp five-cylinder engine, the design study proved capable of reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.
